As I mentioned several weeks ago, there is a movement afoot to place large cone-shaped cement structures just off the beach at Playa La Madera with the stated purpose of creating an artificial reef that is supposed to produce larger waves to benefit surfers. At today's meeting of "El Pueblo en Defensa de la Bahía de Zihuatanejo" it was agreed that we should also tackle this problem as well as the new pier project due to recent efforts by the promoters of this project and their ongoing publicity campaign coinciding with an international surfing competition currently taking place in Ixtapa. They have placed posters around the area and even a banner at the zócalo touting this supposed effort to "rescue the bay" as well as create a new attraction for surfers. On their posters and their website they use logos of many area businesses they claim are sponsoring their efforts. However, several of the supposed sponsors when contacted by us denied being sponsors or authorizing the use of their logos. Hmmmmm...
As far as we can tell, none of the hotels, vacation rentals, residents, or restaurants at Playa La Madera support this project, and like us they prefer to see the beach and bay preserved in their natural state. We and they feel that all of Playa La Madera should remain friendly to swimmers and families instead of turning part or all of it into a surfers' hangout. Not that there is anything wrong with surfers or surfing, but fortunately our region is already blessed with several decent surfing spots, most being easily accessible via public transportation.
One of the regidores (city councilpersons) already responded to the artificial reef promoters expressing doubts about the feasability of their proposal and withholding any approval or support, yet the promoters apparently went ahead and used Zihuatanejo's municipal logo on their propaganda allegedly without authorization, as they allegedly have done with logos of several local businesses.
Personally, I think this looks like another attempt to use public funds along with charity simply in order to sell cement.
We have seen no studies of any kind to support their claims that this project will aid in restoring the health of our bay, which is suffering from pollution problems related largely to serious deficiencies in Zihuatanejo's infrastructure. Until the infrastructural problems are properly addressed and remedied, we see this project, even if it were viable, as the equivalent of putting make-up on a patient dying of cancer. Again, we also believe the bay should be preserved in its natural state as much as possible for the benefit of everyone instead of altered to serve the interests of a few.
For these reasons we are asking people to please express their opinions against this project to its promoters via e-mail. Their e-mail addresses can be found on the CONTACT page of their website: http://www.arrecifespuravida.org/en/contacto.php
Please send a copy of your e-mails to me at zihuarob @ zihuatanejo.net (remove the anti-spam spaces) so that I can show them to participants of our civic front as well as to anyone else who might be interested in the opinions of Zihuatanejo's most esteemed VIPs: our visitors.
Many sincere thanks for your invaluable help in our efforts to protect our bay and work towards remedying the problems causing its deterioration. Like the man says in the beer ad: this one's for you! ;~)
